Paulus (Jurckse)3 Yurckse (Brother of Janneke (Jurckse)2, Father of Janneke (Jurckse)1)1 was born abt. 1630 in Texel, Holland (Netherlands), and died Bet. 1677 - 1686 in Bergen, NJ or Tarrytown, NY. He married Christina (Styntje) Janse Bef. 1655, daughter of Jan Robol. She was born abt. 1632 in Netherlands, and died Aft. 1708. Notes for Paulus (Jurckse) Yurckse: Parents uncertain. It is believed that Janneke (Jurckse) Yurckse who m. Laurens Ackerman is the aunt of Paulus Yurckse. -------------- Dutch records show that the Jurckse family originated from Texel, the largest island in the West Frisian Islands across the Waddensee from the mainland of Holland. Paulus was seen in New York state on Aug 13 1642 which means he had immigrated to the U.S. sometime during his first twelve years. He was also supposedly a servant for the family of Maichael Jansz and married their daughter Christina. --------------- The spelling of the last name has gone through several modifications since the immigrant arrived in New York. The Dutch spelling of 'Jurckse' seemed to be changed almost immediately to 'Yurckse'. As some of the family feld to Canada during the Revolutionary War (being Loyalists), the name was changed to 'Yerex' or 'Yeurex'. It was also seen spelled in Canada as 'Yerks or 'Yerkes', but rarely. Once decendants migrated back to the United States, the 'Yerex' spelling was almost always changed to either 'Yerkes' or 'Yerks'. Therefore, the spelling of the last name in these records are the first encountered spelling, unless another spelling has been found subsequently on official documents. More About Paulus (Jurckse) Yurckse: Immigration: 13 Aug 1642, 'Den Houttuyn', New Amsterdam, NY Notes for Christina (Styntje) Janse: Parents of Christina not proved. The first name of her father should be Jan. |
