He was stationed in Italy and was an airplane mechanic. never was in combat, but repaired the planes that were involved.
He specialized as a propeller mechanic, Cute story: when he went to sign up, the recruiter asked him what was he good at. My dad said, "Well, I can ride a motorcycle pretty well." The recruiter took a liking to my dad and said, "Yeah, well that is the last time you will ever say that to anyone." What else are you good at? That's when my dad said he was an auto mechanic and the rest is history, as they say. Apparently, the guys who rode motorcycles were used to deliver messages and didn't have a good survival rate.
