This article was published in the Newtown Register on Thursday, February 9, 1911. According to this brief article, on Saturday, Jan 28, 1911 there was a surprise birthday party for Reginald W Parrett. Reginald was married to Irene Tierney. Irene is a daughter of Mary Jane Kinneary and Thomas W Tierney. They lived at 9 Chestnut Street in Corona, Queens. Corona is a dense neighborhood in the former Township of Newtown in the New York City borough of Queens. It is neighbored by Flushing to the east, Jackson Heights to the west, Forest Hills and Rego Park to the south, Elmhurst to the southwest, and East Elmhurst to the north.

The party was attended by numerous relatives and friends….

Mr and Mrs Reginald Parrett.
Mrs Reginald Parrett is also known as Irene Tierney Parrett . Irene was 21 years old. She was Reginald’s third wife and sister of Reginald’s second wife… got that? Yea it took me a while too. Irene’s sister Mary, was Reginald’s second wife. She died unexpectedly in 1909. Reginalds first wife died in 1908. Talking about a string of bad luck…. wow!

Mr and Mrs F. J. Parrett
F.J. Parrett is presumably Reginalds brother or son from his first marriage. I’m not really sure yet.

Margrite Parrett
I’m not sure who Margrite is. She could be his daughter from Reginalds first marriage.

Mr and Mrs James Sproul Tierney (James is about 28 years old)
James is a brother of Irene and the son of Mary Jane Kinneary and Thomas W Tierney. He was a NY Police Officer . He was married to a Sarah Gray. I don’t know if they had any children.

Mr and Mrs Simeon LJ Tierney (Simeon is about 25 years old)
Simeon is a brother of Irene and the son of Mary Jane Kinneary and Thomas Tierney. He may have been a Police Officer and possibly a private detective later in life. Simeon was married to Anna Smith. They had just married at the time of this party and had their first of four kids the following year. I don’t know if there are any living decendants of this branch of the family tree.

Mr James Tierney (about age 18)
James is a first cousin of Irene and is the son of Sarah Beattie and James Tierney. He married Adelle Lehr in 1927, but died in 1931 when the car he was driving went out of control on Edgecombe Avenue, 25 feet south of the Middle Bridge Viaduct. The car plunged 100 feet into Colonial Park, landing upright, but killing him.

Miss Grace Elinor Tierney (about age 19)
Grace is a first cousin of Irene and is the daughter of Sarah Beattie and James Tierney. She sang a vocal solo for the event. Grace later became Grace Dunn. They had no children.

Miss Isabelle Tierney (about age 14)
Isabelle is a first cousin of Irene and is the daughter of Sarah Beattie and James Tierney. She later became Isabelle Lewis. She is my Grandmother.

Mr Charles Beattie (about 43 years old)
Charles is the brother of Sarah Beattie Tierney.

Also in Attendance….
Mr and Mrs J F Dobbs (Capt. Dobbs made some humorous speeches)
Mr and Mrs R L Robins of Northport, Long Island
Maria Flood
Mr and Mrs Daragh – Police Officer
Mr and Mrs J Adams
Mr Lawrence McCaughery (played a musical instrument for the event)
Miss Precella Dobbs
Mr and Mrs John N Perkins of Boston
Mr and Mrs F.A. Kuell (Mrs Kuell played a musical instrument for the event)

Several weeks ago, I received a phone call from Lynn Williams in response to a letter I had sent her, telling her that I believed we were cousins through the Tierney branch of our family tree. She confirmed that she was the granddaughter of Irene Tierney. Irene is the daughter of Thomas W. Tierney. Thomas W. Tierney is the brother of my great grandfather James F. Tierney. That makes us second cousins, once removed.

We had a wonderful conversation, exchanging stories of what we knew of the Tierney’s. Then she dropped the bomb. She has a picture of her great grandfather… AND HIS FATHER! “His Father” is James Tierney (b. 1835 in Ireland, d. Feb 1888 in Manhattan) and is our shared relative.

Today I received color copies of the photo’s. In my humble opinion, no further relationship validation is needed. Just look at the photo’s (especially the nose’s).

Several weeks ago I visited the final resting place of Mary Tierney, my Great-Great Grandmother. After receiving her Death Certificate from the New York City Archives, I was able to determine that she was buried at Calvary Cemetery in Queens, New York. Unfortunately when I arrived, I found her plot, but there was no gravestone. I was hoping that there would be a gravestone with markings to fill me in on some missing pieces of the Tierney clan puzzle.

So in desperation, I requested an Internment report from Calvary Cemetery. It was a bit expensive, but I think well worth it. Much to my surprise, I received it in just two weeks time. So, the Internment report solved several Tierney mysteries for me.

The first mystery solved was the date of death for James Tierney, Mary’s husband and a coachman around New York City. According to the Internment Report, he was buried on February 6, 1888 at the age of 53. Based on Census records, I figured he had died between 1880 and 1900, but that left a large margin of error. But it does make perfect sense since the last known record of him was the 1880 Census of him living in New York City. Based on the date of burial, it’s a safe bet that he died in the first week of February 1888. So, working backwards, that places his Date of Birth in Ireland sometime around 1835. Armed with that info, I have requested his Death Certificate from the New York City Archives. Let’s see what that brings back.

One thing that has puzzled me for some time is the 1900 Census Record for Mary Tierney. It indicates that she had eight children but that only four were alive as of 1900. I knew one, my Great-Great grandfather had died in the late 1890’s, but who were the other three? My Uncle who started this genealogy project knew of the five children and my census records research confirmed the five, but no others. But the internment report solves this mystery. So based on the internment report and other research I have performed, here are the eight children of James Tierney and Mary Sproul Tierney.

Francis Tierney (b. 1852, d. July 1855)

Francis was the first child of James and Mary Tierney and the first of the mystery children. He died before their second child was born at the age of three. I do not know the cause of death yet.

Thomas Tierney (b. November 1856 in New York, d. September 1918 )

Thomas, their second child, I believe went on the marry Mary Jane Kinneary. They had 5 children; James, Mary, Simeon, Irene and Eleanor. Thomas lived in New York City for all of his life.

There may be living relatives of this branch somewhere between New York and South Carolina. I know Eleanor went on to marry an architect by the name of Edward Schneider and had move to Fayetteville, North Carolina sometime after 1930. They had at least one daughter, Eleanor who was born in New York City.

According to the several census records, Thomas was employed as a shipping “Clerk”.

James F. Tierney (b. abt 1858, d. November 4, 1896)

James is my Great Grandfather. He had seven children; Frank Noel, Mary, Gertrude, Grace, James, John and Isabelle. He died in Brooklyn, New York at the age of 38 after a attack of appendicitis. James was employed at Arnold Constable in New York City.

The two children of Isabelle Tierney Lewis, Jeanne and Lloyd had several children, well establishing this branch of the Tierney legacy.

Mary Jane Tierney (b. abt 1858, d. April 1859)

Mary Jane is another of the mystery children. She died at the age of one in 1859. Again, I do not know the cause of death yet.

John L Tierney (b. April 20, 1864 in New York, d. December 21, 1907 in San Francisco, CA)

John moved to San Francisco sometime between 1880 and 1900. Once out there, he married Isabella E Daugalada, also known as Belle. She is of Chilean decent. I have numerous letters from him to his nephew, Frank Tierney. They wrote about business and the family on a regular basis. John and Belle survived the devastating 1906 San Francisco earthquake. They had no children. He was a salesman. In May 1907, he developed a “Gastric Ulcer” and never quite recovered. He died just six months later in San Francisco. I have ordered his death certificate from the State of California and expect is shortly. Hopefully it will tell me where he is buried.

Frank A. Tierney (b. Septermber 24, 1864 in New York, d. June 12, 1936 in Brooklyn)

Frank was a decorated 32-year New York Police Department veteran. He spent several years in Chinatown, heading up the move against the gangs there. Unfortunately, he encountered some political trouble in 1918 with Police Commissioner Enright who took the opportunity to demote him. It seems that although he was in and out of some minor trouble through his career, he was generally well respected and liked. He retired as a Captain on December 31, 1928, ending his career managing the Miller Avenue Precinct in Brooklyn.

Frank was married to Theresa A. Ryan and had three children; John, Raymond and Frank. It is from this branch of the Tierney clan that I found my most recently discovered third cousin, Raymond A. Tierney. This branch of the Tierney legacy is well established also.

Joseph Tierney (b. abt 1867 in New York, d. November 1922)

Joseph was known to my Uncle as “the black sheep of the family”. He appears to have always played by his own sets of rules and was a big gambler. He surprised his brother John with suddenly deciding to marry Anna Patkay 1907 at the age of 39. In a letter to Frank Noel Tierney, his nephew, Joseph asked him to be his best man, but not before advising him which horse to bet on at the races.

Joseph died just 15 years after marrying Anna. He is buried with my Great-Great Grandmother at Calvary Cemetery, but there is no sign of Anna. As of now, I do not know what happened to her or whether they had any children. I suspect that they did not have any children though.

Ann Tierney (b. abt 1871, d. February 1873)

Anna was the third of the mystery children. She died at just two years of age. The cause of death is not yet known.

When I first took over the family genealogy project from my Uncle Lloyd Lewis, there was one page of his notes that I ignored for some time because the notes he had on the names were scarce.

On the top of one page, he wrote the name Kate Sproul Colwell.. Next to it were the names; Lou Colwell Gent, Mary Lou Gent and John Gent. Now, the name Spoul was familiar to me. It happens to be the maiden name of my great, great grandmother, Mary Sproul Tierney (b. abt 1829 in Ireland), who married James Tierney (b. abt 1826 in Ireland). I have seen several variations of the Spoul name including Sproul, Sproule and Sproull.

So, based on my Uncles notes, I assumed that Kate Sproul Colwell, is the sister of Mary Sproul, wife of James Tierney. Several weeks ago, I decided to investigate this branch of the family a little more in-depth. So, my first step was to talk to my Mom. She remembers a Lou Gent being referred to as “Cousin Lou”. She was a school teacher in New York City. So with that small amount of information I was able to find Lou Gent in the 1930 census records. She was married to a Harold G Gent and had twins; John and Mary Lou. In this census, her occupation is listed as a “teacher”. So at least I know I found the right Lou Gent.

Now that I found Lou, the rest of the family was fairly easy to find, working backwards. Lou was the daughter of Louise and John S. Colwell. So obviously my next step was to pull the death certificate of John S. Colwell. It was fairly easy to find, but here is where my trouble began. It lists his parents as Catherine Tierney and Michael Colwell. WOW. My first reaction was to assume that this was a mistake and that the informant had taken the married name of Catherine’s sister and used it. I’ve seen lots of mistakes like this on death certificates before.

So Michael Colwell (b. abt 1832 in Ireland) and Catherine (b. abt 1826 in Ireland) had six other children besides John S. Colwell. I haven’t bothered researching all of them yet as I am still looking for resolution of Catherine’s maiden name. I soon found Catherine Colwell’s death certificate at the New York City Archives. Awesome! Now I can finally put things to rest. Wait a minute, not so fast. It lists her father as “Frank Tierney” and her mother as “Unable to state”. Now I’m really confused. I know there was a Frank who was the son of my gr, gr grandfather. Could this also be a mix up? Could Frank be the fathr of James and Catherine Tierney?

Based on her death certificate I was able to determine that Catherine was buried at Calvary Cemetery in Flushing, Queens, not to far from where Mary Sproul Tierney is buried. James could be there too, but I have not yet confirmed it with any type of record.

So, to try to put this issue to bed, I decided to pull the death certificate of one of Catherine and Michael Coldwell’s other children to see if it can give me a last name of Catherine. His name was Thomas W. Colwell. I just received it today. It lists his mothers name as “CATHERINE TIERNEY”

Conclusion

Pending some further investigation, it does appear that instead of Catherine being the sister of Mary Sproul, she is the sister of James Tierney, my gr, gr, grandfather. Since James Tierney died almost two centuries before Mary Sproul Tierney, it is conceivable that relatives, who passed information onto Lloyd may have had their facts a little mixed up. They may have thought Catherine was related to Mary because James had not been around for so long. Who knows? Whatever the reason, all evidence now is pointing to Catherine Colwell being a Tierney. So it appears that all the Colwell’s and Gent’s are cousins through the Tierney side of our family. I know there are members of those families out there. Now I just have to find them.
