Today I received a copy of Erie  Alderman Edward Hayes Death Certificate.  Edward was born May 2, 1853 in Limerick, Ireland.  One interesting fact about this Death Certificate is that it provides another  spelling for his mother’s name.  This time we see it as “Coughey”.  We have also seen Cowie, Cowhey and Couhy.

I found this interesting video on Cousin Jim.

A lifelong Republican, Jim has had a long and successful career in magazine publishing, including Fortune. A traditional conservative believing in small government and fiscal responsibility, Jim has also been deeply concerned about the deep polarization in America over the last couple years even as the problems we face grow in severity. Obama’s promise to work toward national unity appealed to Jim as well as his belief that the route to economic prosperity starts with building a strong middle class.

Ellis Island Medals of Honor
When: Saturday, May 9, 2009

The Ellis Island Medals of Honor are presented to Americans of diverse origins for their outstanding contributions to their own ethnic groups and to American society. Honorees typically include U.S. Presidents, Nobel Prize winners, leaders of industry, and gifted artists, performers, and athletes. Each receives a specially crafted Ellis Island Medal of Honor.

The U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate have unanimously passed resolutions sanctioning the National Ethnic Coalition of Organizations and the Ellis Island Medals of Honor. This recognition inspires us to work anew for a better world through the advancement, protection, and encouragement of all of America’s ethnic groups, religions, and races.

This week’s genealogical success was with the Hayes branch on the Lewis side of the family. In the recent months I had found many articles that mentioned James V. Hayes, but lacked concrete evidence to link them to the descendants of Patrick Hayes and Johanna Cowhey.

The following is an excerpt of an article written by my new found cousin James B. Hayes.

In the May-June 2008 issue of Dublin’s “Ireland of the Welcomes” magazine, there is a several-page photo-article by a native of NYC, James B. HAYES, former publisher of “Fortune” magazine, now living and writing in Colorado Springs, in which he reminisces about a particular trip to Ireland many years earlier in which he was struck by the remarkable thoughtfulness of one gentleman, in particular – Mr. MURRAY, proprietor of Murray & Son Ltd. Drapery, Charleville, Co. Cork.*
