Speros Condos, longtime resident of Stamford, CT, passed away Wednesday, October 3, 2007 at the age of 94 at the Stamford Hospital. He was born in Houston, TX on November 26, 1912. He was the son of the late Thomas Condos and Mary Konzotsa Condos.

Mr. Condos worked for the Department of Parks and Recreation for the City of Stamford. He was an alum of the University of New Hampshire. He was very active with many sport programs in Stamford such as hardball and boxing along with his late twin brother George. He also enjoyed boating and fishing on the Long Island Sound.

He is survived by a niece, Jean Yerks of Port Chester, NY. He was predeceased by his wife, Marian Kileen Condos in February 1986, his parents, and two brothers, Nicholas and George Condos.

Family and Friends are invited to a funeral service that will be celebrated on Monday, October 8th at 10 am at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 1230 Newfield Avenue, Stamford, CT. Father Constantine Mathews will be the Pastor officiating. Interment will follow to Woodland Cemetery, in Stamford, CT. The family has entrusted the funeral arrangements to the Bosak Funeral Home, 453 Shippan Avenue, Stamford, CT.

Maryland special appeals judge and ocean mariner extraordinaire, Ridgely Melvin died at his Annapolis residence on Oct. 11, 1999. Ridge was born and lived almost his entire life at Melvin Point, overlooking the Chesapeake Bay’s South River. He came to Princeton from Alexandra, Va., Episcopal H.S., majored in politics, and was a member of Cap and Gown. He was on the freshman and jayvee swimming teams, played end on our championship 150-lb. football teams, and was active in the Yacht Club. During WWII Ridge served as an officer aboard the battleship Washington in the Pacific naval campaigns. As a devoted yachtsman from childhood, Ridge raced in a variety of classes and won the Triton Class Natl. Championship in the early 1970s. In 1985 he and wife Lucy sailed their sloop Song across the Atlantic. For the next eight years they lived aboard while sailing through European and Mediterranean waters.

Ridge’s law career was distinguished both as a judge and trial lawyer. He was a member of the three-judge panel that disbarred V.P. Agnew for “deceitful and dishonest conduct” and found him unfit as a member of the Maryland bar.

The class extends its sympathy to Ridge’s entire family including his sister, Elizabeth, widow of Don Patterson. We will miss Ridge.

Elizabeth Sommerville Melvin Patterson, 80, a five-year resident of the Blakehurst retirement community in Towson and a lifelong resident of Annapolis, died July 24 at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital in Virginia. Known as “Libby” and “Nanny,” Mrs. Patterson was born Feb. 10, 1923, in Annapolis, the daughter of the late Judge Ridgely P. and Augusta Burwell Melvin.

A homemaker, she loved to travel and read, and was a member of St. Anne’s Parish and the Hamilton Street Club. Her husband of 55 years, Donald H. Patterson, former publisher of The (Baltimore) Sun and president of the A.S. Abell Co., died Dec. 2, 1997.

She was the sister of the late Judge Ridgely P. Melvin Jr., Augusta Melvin Torgerson and Mary Melvin Clark.

Surviving are two sons, Donald H. Patterson Jr. of Virginia Beach, Va., and Timothy C. Patterson of Annapolis; two daughters, Elizabeth P. Langslet of Montvale, N.J., and Susan P. Davis of Annapolis; one brother, John B. Melvin of North Carolina; 14 grandchildren; and three greatgrandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at St. Anne’s Episcopal Church, 199 Duke of Gloucester St. Burial will follow in Christ Church Cemetery in West River.

Memorial contributions, in lieu of flowers, can be made to Hospice of the Chesapeake, 8424 Veterans Highway, Millersville, MD 21108.

MARTINEZ – Wylda B Nimidoff, 81, died Tuesday at the Martinez Convalescent Hospital.

A homemaker, Nimidoff was a native of Paterson, N.J., and a resident of Martinez for the last 1-1/2 years.

Recitation of the Rosary will be at 6:15 p.m. Friday at Connolly & Taylor Chapel, Martinez.  Entombment will be at the Bellevue Memorial Gardens, Daytona Beach, FL.

She is survived by her son, Joe Nimidoff of Oakland; daughter Cynthia of Lafayette; two sisters, Marie Scherer of Walnut Creek and Stephanie Sessions of Delhi, N.Y.; and three grandchildren.

BERKELEY – Donald William Yerks Sr., 81, of the Bayville section of Berkeley, died Monday, Nov. 24 at home.

He has lived in Bayville for the last 46 years, and retired from the Ciba-Geigy Corp. of Toms River in 1984 after working there 20 years.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army Air Force as a staff sergeant.

Surviving are his wife of 46 years, Minabell a son and daughter-in-law, Donald W. and Ann Emily Yerks Jr., of Brielle a daughter and son-in-law, MaryAnn and Richard Sengstack of Whiting a brother and sister-in-law, Clarence and Edna Yerks of Toms River and two grandchildren, Ashley and Sean Yerks.

Visiting will be from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 28 at the Anderson and Campbell Funeral Home, 703 Main St., Toms River. A funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 29 at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Silverton Cemetery, Hooper Avenue, Toms River.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Van Dyke Hospice, c/o Community Medical Center, 99 Route 37 West, Toms River, NJ 08755, or the American Cancer Society, 1035 Hooper Ave., Toms River, NJ 08753.

James L. Yerks Jr. of Cos Cob died on Oct. 1 at Greenwich Hospital. He was 95 years old.

Mr. Yerks was born in Goldens Bridge, N.Y., on May 21, 1912 to the late Catharine and James L. Yerks Sr. He had lived in Greenwich since 1919.

Mr. Yerks retired from Petro Oil. He was a member of the Cos Cob Volunteer Fire Company since 1933 and served as treasurer for many years. In addition, Mr. Yerks was a member of GREATS, Westchester Fairfield Horticultural Society, Kiwanis Club of Greenwich, Mianus River Boat and Yacht Club and Knights of Columbus.

Mr. Yerks was predeceased by his first wife, Eleanor Hone Yerks, his second wife, Florence Baird Yerks, his brother Kenneth Yerks and his sister Mary Ferris.

He is survived by his sons, James L. Yerks III of Stratford and Raymond K. Yerks of Coral Springs, Fla.; his stepson, Edward Baird of Greenwich; six grandchildren; two step-grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.

There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Donations in Mr. Yerks’s memory may be made to the Cos Cob Volunteer Fire Department.

DELHI — Walter Clarke Root III, 78, of Clifton Park, former longtime Delhi resident, passed away Saturday, Feb. 23, 2002, at Schuyler Ridge Health Care Residence in Clifton Park after a battle with Parkinson’s Disease.

The son of the late Walter C. Jr. and Helen (Crane) Root, he was born Oct. 10, 1923, in Kansas City, Mo., where he began his formal education at the University of Kansas, then joining the U.S. Merchant Marine. He was appointed a cadet midshipman and graduated from the Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point with a bachelor of science degree, later seeing duty on T-2 tankers in the Pacific, Indian Ocean and Persian Gulf until the end of World War II.

After the war, he began a long career in the hospitality industry, eventually going to New York City where he served as domestic sales representative for Sheraton Hotels.

He later became director of sales for Intercontinental Hotels Corp., a subsidiary of Pan-American Airways, for which he traveled extensively, assisting in opening hotels in all Pan-Am destination cities in Latin America.

Later a director of group travel and sales incentive tours for Embassy Tours, Walter subsequently re-joined Sheraton Hotels as director of international sales and, in 1968, became general manager of Grapetree Bay Hotel in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands.

The Root family came to Delhi in 1972, where Walter joined the Hospitality Division at SUNY-Delhi and taught hotel sales and marketing, housekeeping and tourism for 13 years until retirement. He moved to Clifton Park three years ago.

A U.S. Navy reservist, Boy Scout counselor and assistant troop leader, he was founder of the Association of Group Travel Executives and was a member of the Hotel Sales and Marketing Association, St. Mary’s Parish in Waterford and served in numerous charitable and civic volunteer capacities over the years.

Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Barbara (Sessions) Root; two sons, Walt of Clifton Park, and Bill and his wife, Ellen, Root of Altamont; four grandchildren, Kevin, Brian and Megan Root, Samantha and her husband, Brian, Taylor; and a great-grandson, Austin Taylor.

He was predeceased in 2001 by his only sister, Helen Hill.

Friends are invited to call from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Hall & Peet Funeral Home in Delhi, where the family will be in attendance and a vigil service will be held at 8:30 p.m. A funeral Mass, to celebrate Walter’s life, will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 26, at St. Peter’s Church, Delhi, where he was a former parishioner. The Rev. James McDevitt will preside, assisted by deacon Thomas O’Connell. Burial will be later in the Woodland Cemetery. A reception, following the Mass, will be at the SUNY-Delhi Hospitality Center.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to the American Parkinson’s Disease Association, 1250 Hylan Blvd., Suite 4-B, Staten Island, NY 10305, will be appreciated.

Today I received a copy of Erie  Alderman Edward Hayes Death Certificate.  Edward was born May 2, 1853 in Limerick, Ireland.  One interesting fact about this Death Certificate is that it provides another  spelling for his mother’s name.  This time we see it as “Coughey”.  We have also seen Cowie, Cowhey and Couhy.
